Focus on the best concept cars of 2019

At Auto Guangzhou 2018 this year, BASF and the Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. Ltd. (GAC R&D Center) will present for the first time a perspective on three jointly developed electric vehicles. They are all designed to meet the various needs of Chinese drivers. Designed as two-seaters, the electric vehicles have been developed by the GAC R&D Center with the support of the prototype and material expertise from BASF’s “Designfabrik.”

With BASF’s innovative materials and solutions, the new concept cars cater to a wide range of drivers and address their different needs: seniors, drivers, and more. They also take into account the trend of car-sharing, one of the fastest-growing urban mobility concepts in the world.

“Car-sharing and electrification are very important developments in the global automotive market. Moreover, the individual needs and preferences of Chinese drivers have diversified due to a growing number of older drivers. BASF’s innovative materials enable flexible design and enhanced features that best suit the different styles of our concept vehicles.” — Zhang Fan, Vice President, GAC R&D Center

BASF is involved in all three e-concept cars through holistic air-cleaning solutions for seat fabrics, as well as materials for the construction of the body parts and battery of the electric vehicles. Additionally, in collaboration with the GAC R&D Center, exterior body coatings have been developed, creating a unique personality for each concept vehicle. This collaboration is BASF’s first of its kind with a Chinese OEM.

For details on BASF materials, the three Concept Cars currently on display at the 16th Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition include:

  • 2US: Two-seater electric vehicle designed for older drivers. As a unique design feature, it has a swiveling seat. This helps older drivers and passengers easily enter and exit the vehicle. The plastic transmissions made from BASF’s Ultramid Advanced N allow for smooth operation of the rotating mechanism, which is designed to pivot horizontally 90 degrees in and out of the cabin.
  • 2U: This car is designed to appeal to women looking for a car look that matches their individual style, showcasing possibilities such as a unique seat concept with translucent Ultramid Vision coating parts from BASF. The fur-like surface of the passenger seat is enhanced by BASF’s Ultrafuse TPU 3D printing solution.
  • 2ALL: This vehicle has several design elements to meet the specific requirements of car-sharing, including ease of use and low maintenance. For example, the front bumper made from BASF’s HPM elastomer has an excellent scratch-resistant elastomer design. The backrest and padding of the particle foam Infinergy (E-TPU) from BASF combine comfort and durability.

The Ludwigshafen chemical group BASF and metal producer Nornickel have recently joined forces to meet the growing demand for battery materials in the future. The first commercial cooperation production plant is being established in Finland. It was chosen as the first location for Harjavalta, Finland. The plant is being built near the nickel and cobalt refinery of Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel).

The cooperation with GAC emphasizes that the development of the automotive industry towards electronic mobility is a positive thing for BASF. This means that the value of chemicals in the car is increasing, and thus also the potential revenue for BASF in vehicles. The focus will not only be on the battery, as, for example, coatings that reflect radiation could also be a topic — as impressively shown by the three concept vehicles.
